The Great Florida Triathlon

T&T Review December 2010
SWIM 2.6 MILES • RIDE 112 MILES • RUN 26.2 MILES
Trinis Come Good by CHRIS CHRISTO

The 20th Great Floridian Triathlon Iron Distance is a race for serious athletes. A total of 264 competitors registered for the event but on this morning of the race, October 23, 2010, only 230 are at Lake Minneola, Clermont, Lake County Florida. Injuries and “life” have taken their toll among the entrants; for sure the race will whittle the field further.

Only time will tell who will breast the tape after 140.6 miles, earning the right to be called ironman.

After nine months of preparation, Diane Henderson and John Lum Young, representing Corkie’s Casuals (T&T) and Trinidad and Tobago Road Runners Club, will learn if they have what it takes in their first outing at this distance. For sure they are way out of their comfort zone.

Berlin by Foot

T&T Review Seprember 2010
Berlin Marathon, September 26, 2010
By CHRIS CHRISTO

Berlin Germany, with an area of 890 square kilometres and a population of 3.4 million, is among Europe’s largest cities. There are any number of ways for sightseeing here, but one great way to experience this metropolis is by running through its districts. On Sunday 26 September, this is exactly the plan of Glen Doyle and John Lum Young of Trinidad and Tobago Road Runners Club (TTRRC) as they await the start of the 37th annual Berlin Marathon, a WorldMarathonMajor.

The starting point is in the 235 hectare Tiergarten, once the private hunting grounds of the monarchy. In 1717, Frederick I, King of Prussia, opened the park to the public and it has been an important green space of the city ever since.

On this Sunday morning, it is 9°C but feels warmer because of the thick cloud cover. No breeze, just the persistent rain soaking the runners. Doyle and Lum Young jog to keep warm as they line up on Strasse des 17 Juni. This street had been renamed following the events of June 17, 1953 in the former East Berlin when Soviet troops broke up massive demonstrations leaving 153 dead. June 17 was declared a public holiday in former West Germany.
